This is a very old building … 400-500 years old so bound to be some creaky floorboards etc…. The staff were very friendly and very accommodating regarding our early check in … breakfast was just lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay
My wife found this place by doing a search for restaurants in the area. It has great reviews so this was a planned visit. We were there for lunch and we both had a special for Thursday. We were glad that we did! My wife had the burrata, wild garlic and basil ravioli and I had the 10 oz pork chop in cider jus. Both were excellent. Service was very good. Highly recommend!
Booked on line at short notice. Weird arrival experience untial waitress checked us in- then the barman was all smiles. Taken to table- one chair was a bit wobbl. Water glass on table stuck to the table due to wipe-down procedure. Table sticky. Gents loo, tap was loose and difficult to use, has black mould around its base. Service fine, food great, the bill was didsappointing. Service charge added- no opportunity to volunteer “a tip”, there it was at 12.5%. It’s a controversial opinion but I don’t routinely tip- and I’m less inclined to tip subsequently if these “service charges” are added with wild abandon. I’m sorry- you don’t get to decide how I spend my earnings, and shouldn’t the customer decide whether to tip or not? So we asked for the tip to be removed…which started something; “what did I do wrong as I need to tell my manager?” I found this odd and challenging; waiting staff did nothing wrong, and the food was fine, nor was there anything exemplary in the service. And why should the manager be bothered? This all felt strange and contrived. I agreed to the terms & conditions of the contract- I order food, chef makes food, waiter serves food, I eat the food, I pay for the food. If customers need to pay a “bribe” to get reasonable & professional service from a service provider we’re in a societal pickle…a tip, it’s not a service charge- that’s management drivel (How much would the chef get? How much would my waiter get of that tip..? Does the manager skim some off? How do I check where my money goes?). A tip is optional and at customer discretion. When we start adding unsolicited “service charges” to bills and then customers face mini-confrontations from staff (i.e., "what did I do wrong?"), wrapped in veiled “management caution” we’re entering unnecessary territory for what should be an enjoyable experience…if the prices aren’t right, review them, don’t place burdens & expectations on customers to address shortfalls. Could’ve been 5/5, but infrastructure, cleanliness, semi-confrontational service at the end knocked it down to 3/5. This is the UK, not the USA, tipping is not and should not be expected.
Wow, what a great pub and hotel with a fantastic restaurant. We were there for the night and couldn't have picked a better place. Beautifully clean, large spacious bedroom with everything you needed, very good quality toiletries and a big comfortable bed! The area is off the beaten track, quiet and with a river running along the back beside the beautiful outdoor seating area. Staff were so friendly and helpful, barman even carried my bag upstairs for me. We booked for dinner and had an Amazingly delicious meal, fresh produce, tasty and filling, beautifully cooked and presented in a relaxed atmosphere. We had a great sleep, refreshing showers and then had a delicious breakfast. Could not fault anything about our stay, it was fabulous and the staff make this hotel/restsurant/bar, they are all super lovely.
Stunning Location
A great location, really well presented rooms with all mod cons, comfy bed, lovey welcome gift of homemade biscuits and fudge. Delicious breakfast, polite and helpful staff. I would highly recommend this pub/ restaurant/country hotel. Stunning location close to many interesting places in Dorset.
Some weeks beforehand we Booked table for 4, for 12.45. Booking confirmed. Arrived on the dot. No table. Left us standing, and waiting. Eventually the young man found napkins and cutlery, showed us to a table. The restaurant wasn’t busy, so why the lengthy delays? We waited to order, waited to receive our food, waited and waited. Neither waiter was at all interested : didn’t ask if we were happy, didn’t return to offer puddings. He stood with his back to us, behind the bar, chatting to his mate, and we had to go over to ask him for a pudding menu…which he later brought, then went away to chat again..we waited..and finally got our 2 puddings. We finally were able to pay the bill at 3.0 REALLY poor service, quite frankly lack of interest and training.
Room 6
This being the second time we visited this year unfortunately we were woken up by the people in the room above. We did inform the management. This was bad and we shall not use this room again if we return.
Really nice comfortable home from home
Arrived after a 200 mile motorbike ride round Snowdonia, hot and tired, Liz welcomed us, sorted roo s which wete ready. Had cold beers on a table before we had unloaded, that's service. Atmosphere was great, all staff friendly, evening meal was really tasty with proper pies, no small portion sizes here.
