Douro Valley does not have restaurants unlike a city or town center so meals have to be at the hotel especially if you arrive late in the evening. The restaurant at this hotel only had 12 tables of 2 pax each. They had to add an extra chair for my party of 3.
When we arrived at 8:30pm, we were told that the restaurant is full and could not accommodate us. Another restaurant 10 minutes away is closed on Tuesdays so we had no dinner. The restaurant is very inflexible and did not agree to our suggestions of dining at the bar or seating area outside the restaurant. They could do room service but they wanted to charge us €80 for that service. After much negotiation, they told us they could give us a table at 9:30pm. We finally had dinner at 10pm.?
We also realised that they only open half of the restaurant area for dinner. ?The other half is set up for breakfast. At no point did the restaurant offer to let us sit at the breakfast area. It rained that evening and we were cold and hungry.
The staff at this hotel are very inflexible with no empathy for their customers. Do eat before arriving at the hotel. Food is also expensive at the hotel. A bottle of water is €5.90 and bread charged at €3 per pax.
