Arrived at 14:20, with a check-in time of 14:00 clearly stated on my booking confirmation. However, I was told at reception that I would need to pay £20 to check in before 15:00. I showed my confirmation email, which made no difference.
The staff member explained that the hotel had been sold and that the new owner had changed the check-in policy, saying bookings made before the sale contained the old information. However, I made my booking on 15 January, after the reported sale, and my confirmation email is also dated after this time, yet still states a 14:00 check-in.
When we entered the room, there was no kettle, no cups, no complimentary tea or coffee, and no hand towels. When I asked at reception, the staff member was not surprised and explained that tea and coffee facilities had been removed from the rooms and were now only provided if guests requested them. I asked for these items and they were brought to the room, which I appreciated, along with two hand towels. However, the hand towels were later taken by housekeeping and not replaced, which gave the impression of cost-cutting measures.
The rooms themselves were extremely tired and dated, with curious chipboard-style built-in wooden furnishings that would have looked more at home in a 1940s railway station waiting room.
Overall, the entire experience was miserable and very disappointing, and it fell far below what was advertised and what I reasonably expected based on my booking.
