Nestled among mountains and rivers, the ancient Huizhou village of Chengkan was first established during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Located on Zhongying Street (formerly an official thoroughfare), Wen Yu Hall’s main structure consists of two Ming Dynasty buildings: the former residence of a renowned Xin’an traditional Chinese medicine family and the mansion of a Huizhou salt merchant—both originally owned by prominent official and merchant families. These two buildings were designated as nationally protected cultural heritage sites in 2001 and 2008, respectively.

As a cultural themed boutique hotel, Wen Yu Hall showcases an exceptional collection of architecture, furnishings, calligraphy, paintings, and artifacts—all treasured possessions of its original owners. The collection features over a thousand pieces, primarily Ming-style furniture, literati calligraphy and paintings, exquisite artifacts, and historical documents related to the salt trade. Most items date back to the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods, with some pieces tracing far back as the Han Dynasty. Each piece is a true gem, embodying the elegance of antiquity, the beauty of time, and the rich cultural heritage of Huizhou.
